Developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), the Wildfire Prepared Multifamily program provides clear, science-based requirements—organized into increasing levels of protection—to help reduce vulnerabilities and lower the likelihood of structure ignition.
Because wildfire exploits the weakest link, the most effective protection comes from addressing vulnerabilities together, including defensible space, building features, and ignition pathways.

Wildfire Prepared Home Designation Levels
Wildfire Prepared Multifamily offers two designation levels that reflect increasing levels of wildfire protection.

Essential Designation
Focuses on protection from wind-blown embers, the leading cause of structure ignitions. Most existing multifamily buildings can be retrofitted to achieve this level.
Enhanced Designation
Builds on the Essential designation by adding protection against flames and radiant heat. This level is often achieved during new construction or major exterior renovations.
